Alice Mitchell Newman

April 26, 1937 — January 17, 2024

Mary Alice Mitchell Newman, 86, of Timmonsville, S.C., died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2024, while in hospice care in Florence, SC. She was born April 26, 1937, in Taylorstown, Pa., a daughter of Brant and Mary Durigg Mitchell. She attended Taylorstown and Claysville schools and graduated from Claysville High School in 1955. She then attended Penn Commercial and worked as a secretary before starting her family. In the 1970s, she and her sister gained notice for operating the Amoco service station in Claysville. After that, she and her family moved to the Clarion, Pa., area, near her beloved Cook Forest. While there, she worked for many years in the office of Dr. Gary Odasso, DDS, in Leeper and New Bethlehem. In retirement, she moved to South Carolina with her husband of 49 years, John Arthur Newman, who died Feb. 16, 2011. Wherever she lived, Alice created a home filled with love for her family. She was a huge NASCAR fan, attending many races and meeting one of her idols, Richard Petty. Alice collected Blue Willow dishes and family photos, and she was an avid reader, especially romance novels. While not an adventurous cook, her Swiss steak and chili were family favorites. Every year for decades, she made hundreds of Christmas cookies and shipped them around the country to her children and grandchildren. Surviving are three sons, Brant (Jenny) Newman of Avella, Pa., John M. (Tammie) Newman of Kentucky, and Jim Newman of Florence, who tended to all his mother’s needs during her later years; grandchildren Amanda McAdoo (Seth) Finkey, Mitchell (Kim) McAdoo, Samantha Wolbert (Matthew) Eidemiller, Gina Newman, Ethan Newman, Kayla Tannehill, Jess Snyder, Justin Wolbert, John W. Newman, Christian Newman and Shayla (Kevin Reed) Newman, who provided loving care to Alice during her final months. She also is survived by her sister, Wilda (the late Glenn “Frank”) Smith of Marienville, Pa., son-in-law Dave Wolbert of the Myrtle Beach, S.C., area, and many great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by her daughter, Mary Kathleen “Kate” Newman Wolbert. There will be no public services. Arrangements are being handled by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home, Florence.
