Longtime Northport (NY) resident and Harborfields schoolteacher Anne Sammond, 82, died on April 2nd near the Florence, SC home of one of her daughters, Leslie Schendel, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease.The body will be cremated and ashes interred in Sanford, NC; there will be a memorial mass at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church in Centerport (NY) at 11 AM on Saturday, May 19, 2012. Anne Virginia Pryde was born on October 18, 1929 in Brookville, Long Island.She met her future husband, William (Bill) Sammond, as both attended Hofstra University, from which she graduated in 1949.Married in December, 1950, Anne Sammond began her career as a substitute teacher in the Northport school district.Shortly thereafter, Mrs. Sammond moved to fulltime teaching, generally in 2nd or 3rd grade, in Greenlawn.After many years of dedicated teaching and union activism, Anne Sammond retired from Harborfields in 1983 and moved to Sanford, North Carolina, where she was an avid golfer and duplicate bridge player.Shortly after Mr. Sammond’s death in 1999, Anne was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and moved to SC. Anne Sammond is survived by 5 of her 6 children, all of them graduates of Northport High School:Lynda Feldman (Asheville, NC), Dr. William (Bill) Sammond, Jr. (Ft. Morgan, CO), Leslie Schendel (Florence, SC), Lisa Davenport (Northport, NY) and Richard (Scott) Sammond (Farmingdale, NY).One son, Stephen Sammond (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), died in 2011.Anne Sammond is also survived by daughter-in-law Teri Sammond, sons-in-law Fred Feldman, James Schendel, and Joe Davenport, and 8 grandchildren: Jake & Jesse Feldman, Matthew & Dana Sammond, David & Lia Schendel, Nicole Anne and Emily Hope Davenport. Because she so loved to read to the children she raised and those she taught, donations in her memory may be made to enhance the children’s book collection at the Northport-East Northport Public Library, 151 Laurel Ave, Northport, NY 11768.
