Benny Ray Friar, Sr. Effingham, SC Benny Ray Friar, Sr., 78 of Effingham passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Friar was born in Florence County, a son of the late Jeff and Mary Jane Dennis Friar.He graduated from Clemson University with a B.S. in Agriculture.Mr. Friar was a US Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict having been a recipient of the Purple Heart.He was a member of Oak Grove Masonic Lodge; the V.F.W. Post # 3181; Elim Baptist Church, where he formerly was a Sunday School Teacher and a Deacon.Mr. Friar was the owner and operator of Friar Insurance Agency, a member of the PIA,and was a farmer. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Ida Daphne Poston Friar of the home; two children, Rhonda Friar Dickerson and her husband Tim of Florence and Benny Ray Friar, Jr. and his wife Christine of Richmond, VA; four grandchildren, Kimberly Dickerson Duffey and her husband Brooks and Matthew Dickerson both of Mt. Pleasant, Elaina Friar and Mary Friar both of Richmond, VA; and two sisters, Mary Nell Sawyer and Nella Mae Ard both of Florence. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 14, 2011 in the Elim Baptist Church Family Life Center.Burial will follow in the Church cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Memorial may be made to the Elim Baptist Church Building Fund, 1303 Olanta Highway, Effingham, SC 29541. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Friday at the funeral home.
