He was born one of 10 siblings to the humble and hard working Tempie Sevelle Deems and the heavy handed tenant farmer David Franklin Owens. He grew up agrarian, quit school at the 10th grade contributing, as did his siblings, to the sustenance of the family. He plowed with a mule at times, picked cotton by hand and lived as a boy in a house heated by fire and a wood stove and where one could count the chickens through the floorboard cracks. He knew how to grow things and how to preserve what he grew.He was not a waster of things or resources. He met Jesus and did his best to follow Him, as his own earthly father was absent. He was not an intellectual and he lived a simple, practical faith. He and his wife, Cassie, raised 3 children in a godly Christian home and provided more than their meager incomes warranted. In an effort to curb poor character in his children he spared not the rod when it was necessary. Mr. Owens was a proud veteran of the United States Army, he owned and operated service stations in his early working life and ended his career working in retail sales and management. He was the last of the 10 siblings and, in addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers; Roy, Kelly, Joy, Sr. and Darnell Owens, and his sisters; Christine Bishop, Wilma Edwards, Maggie Purser, Margie Holbrooks, and Lois Owens.
