Carol Dean Cockfield, 88, of Murrells Inlet, SC and formerly of Florence, SC, passed away on Thursday, September 19, 2024. Carol Dean was born in Florence, SC, a daughter of the late Roland Anthony Floyd and Rosa Lee Cain Floyd. She is predeceased by her parents; her husband of 64 years, Marvin Cockfield; son, Marvin Dean Cockfield; and sister, Cheryl Anthony Floyd. Surviving are her; daughters, Leesa Martins of Wesley Chapel, NC and Laura (Jeff) French of Charlotte, NC; her sister, Vivica Floyd of Lexington; grandchildren, Brian Martins, Mitchell ( Holly) Cockfield, Lauren (Chris Erbe) Martins, and Justin (Megan) French; and great-grandchildren, Pierce French, Zeke Erbe, Ada Cate French, and Ezra Erbe. Carol Dean grew up in the Evergreen community surrounded by family and close friends. She graduated from McClenaghan High School and completed training to become a Registered Nurse at the McLeod Infirmary School of Nursing. She began her nursing career working for Dr. Albert Baroody and ended her 50 year career working for Palmetto Center, a South Carolina health facility for drug and alcohol treatment. In addition to her nursing career, Carol Dean was also involved with estate sales with Ann Finch. She found many hidden treasures in the estate sales. Genealogy was a passion of Carol Dean. She enjoyed researching and writing about family history whether from firsthand accounts and interviews or from other sources. She wrote several books about her family history. She also conducted tours for school children at Browntown Museum and often shared a monologue based on her great-great-grand-mother. Carol Dean was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Florence for 60+ years and was a member of the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class. She took pride in teaching adult Sunday school classes as well as a 3-year-old Sunday school class. She also attended Belin United Methodist Church in Murrells Inlet. She was a member and leader of the Sara Blanton Circle and the Wild Rose Garden Club. Carol Dean loved storytelling, her family, music, the Clemson tigers, her friends, and above all her Lord. She never met a stranger and enjoyed sharing her homemade prayer bracelets along with a personal anecdote sometimes containing a God wink. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 PM Wednesday, September 25 2024, at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home with the memorial service to follow at 2:00 PM. Inurnment will be at Florence National Cemetery at a later date.
