Charles Glover (C.G.) Smith, 86, passed away on Friday, May 12, 2023, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence, SC. Charles was born March 1, 1937, in Chilton County AL. He later moved to Aiken, SC where he graduated from Aiken High School and met his wife, Janie. Charles was on the initial team hired at the DuPont plant in Florence, SC and worked as a mechanic and draftsman for over 30 years until his retirement in 1990. It is said he could fix anything mechanical. He was a regular patron for breakfast at Bazen’s through the years. He was a member of Liberty Chapel United Methodist Church where he was a faithful choir member, youth leader, active Sunday School member and Sunday School teacher. Charles was also one of the founding members of Windy Hill Volunteer Fire Department. A skilled carpenter, Charles also owned a roofing company as a side business. When he wasn’t working, he could be found enjoying any one of his favorite hobbies; fishing, photography, cooking, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. He started a BBQ cookout serving family and friends on the evening before Thanksgiving in the 1970’s, which became a tradition for more than 50 years. He will be remembered for his humor and devotion to family and community. He was predeceased by his wife, Janie New Smith and a daughter, Dee Anna Smith; his parents Glover Smith and Inez Smith Nivens, three brothers (Jack, Billy and Milton Smith) and a sister (Willene Davenport). He is survived by his children Charles G. “Chuck” Smith, Jr. of Dillsboro, IN, Cheryl Smith Howle (Roger) of Quinby, Carl G. Smith (Teresa) of Florence, and Clark G. Smith (Michelle) of Aiken; a brother, Ronnie Smith of Leeds, AL, and a sister Sherry Turner of Naples, FL; thirteen grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends and family from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, May17th at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home in Florence. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 18th at 11:00 AM at Liberty Chapel United Methodist Church, 7432 E National Cemetery Rd in Florence, followed by burial in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to McLeod Hospice House, PO Box 100551, Florence, SC 29502, www.mcleodfoundation.org or to Liberty Chapel UMC Choir Fund, PO Box 13502, Florence, SC 29504. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the doctors, nurses, case managers and staff at MUSC, especially those in the Emergency Room, SICU, Step-down unit and on the 8th floor. We also appreciate the entire staff of McLeod Hospice House in Florence. Their care and concern extends beyond physical and mental health and is unmatched.
