Clyde Hurley Nance

July 25, 1931 — May 9, 2021

Clyde Hurley Nance, Jr., 89, of Florence, peacefully passed away in his home surrounded by his children and grandchildren on Sunday, May 9, 2021. Mr. Nance was born and raised in Troy, NC, the son of the late Emma Porter Nance and Clyde Hurley Nance Sr. He attended the University of North Carolina, and during his junior year, he answered his country’s call to service and enlisted in the United States Air Force to serve in the Korean War. He was stationed at Kimpo Air Force Base in Seoul, Korea where he served as a meteorologist. He was later stationed at Shaw Field Air Force Base whereupon his honorable discharge, moved to Florence, SC. He opened C H Nance Commercial Contracting, which he operated for nearly fifty years until his retirement. Mr. Nance, along with his wife, Helen were Charter Members of Highland Park Methodist Church where he served in many capacities including many years as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He and his wife were instrumental in the growth of Highland Park’s ministry over the last 60 years where he remained active until his death. Mr. Nance was a devoted gardener and enjoyed sharing his many vegetables with family, friends, and neighbors. He was also an avid sportsman and enjoyed surf fishing at the family beach home in Holden Beach, NC. He was also passionate about his beloved Tar Heels and fervently followed them through every season. Most of all, he will be remembered for his unwavering devotion and commitment to his family, church, and country. He was truly a shining example of our country’s greatest generation. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Helen King Nance, and sister, Jean McKinnon. Surviving are his children, Clyde H. (JoAnn) Nance, III, Jane (Jeff) Smith and John (Kimberly) Nance, all of Florence; his grandchildren, Carson Nance of Nashville, TN, Emily Nance (Will) Edwards of Florence, Jenna Nance of Florence, Jennifer (Brian) Harvey of Carthage, NC, John Kent Smith of Florence, Christopher (Anna) Smith of Florence, Coleman King Nance and Madelyn Claire Nance, both of Florence; his great-grandchildren, Blythe, Malorie and Addison; and sister, Frances N. Kornegay of Troy, NC. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at Florence Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with military honors. Entombment to follow directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM- 8:00 PM on Monday, May 10, 2021, in the Highland Park United Methodist Church Sanctuary and other times at the residence of John Nance, 1854 Jason Drive, Florence, SC. Memorials may be made to the Highland Park United Methodist Church, Discretionary Fund, 1300 Second Loop Road, Florence, SC 29505.
