Ellen Dorothy Weatherford Askins

Ellen Dorothy Weatherford Askins, 83, of Florence, passed away on Saturday, November 6, 2021. Mrs. Askins was born the daughter of the late Nellie Hayes Weatherford and Dargan Weatherford.She was a lifetime member of Elim Baptist Church and was a private woman, but proud at the same time.She was best known for working right beside her husband for over 65 years on their farm in the fields, working or picking vegetables or cutting and loading wood and delivering to longstanding customers in the downtown Florence area, and Savannah Grove and Effingham.Mrs. Askins worked long and hard and lived a simple pauper’s life so that she could give their children homes of their own so they could live fuller and stress free lives in a home place that was paid for where families would be proud to grow. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her sisters, Marilyn Poston and Carolyn Turner. Mrs. Askins is survived by her husband, Gene Franklin Askins; daughter, Emma Jean Padgett (Glenn) of Effingham; sons, Franklin Ernest Askins of Timmonsville and Dexter “Petie” Edward Askins (Rachel) of Effingham; grandchildren, Jimmy Keith Pierce, Jeanne Diane McCook (Johnathan), Gabriel Santana Askins and Dekota Askins; great-grandchildren, Jason, Veronica and Kaylee Pierce; and special niece, Stella McGee. Family and friends wishing to pay their respects may go to the residence at any time. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, November 9, 2021, at the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel.Burial will follow at Garden of Memories. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Elim Baptist Church, Building Fund, 1303 Olanta Highway, Effingham, SC 29541.
