Genell Matthews Hyman, 90, of Scranton, SC, went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 26, 2023. She was born in Florence County, SC, the daughter of the late Dewey William Matthews and Letha Miles Matthews. Mrs. Hyman was a faithful member of Florence Baptist Temple and loved her church. She was also a part of the Lois Windham and Brenda Schneider Sunday School Class. She was the owner and operator of Hyman’s Furniture, “The Little Red Barn”, that opened in 1955, in Scranton, SC and she ran for 66 years. She was a graduate of Lake City High School. Mrs. Hyman was an avid reader, who loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was loving and friendly and touched the lives of everyone she met. She was a beacon of light and joy to all who knew her and her kindness touched the lives of everyone she encountered. Her selfness nature and generous spirit was infectious and her unwavering faith in God inspired all. She dedicated her life to her family and her legacy will live on forever through her grandchildren. Her unwavering love and devotion to family will always be cherished and remembered. She will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her. Her greatest love was to spend time with her family. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Hoyt LeGrande Hyman; her only daughter, Margaret Hyman Carroway; brothers, Donald Matthews and Leo Matthews; sisters, Kathleen Poston, Vickie Buchanan and Juanita Player. She is survived by one son of the home, Kent LeGrande Hyman, of Scranton, SC; three grandsons, Jason Dean Carroway of Scranton, Philip Spencer Carroway (Lauren) of Beaufort and Matthew Hyman (Hope) Carroway, of Florence, SC; three great-grandsons, Caleb Carroway of Florence, Spencer and Heath Carroway of Beaufort; one-great-granddaughter, Caitlyn Carroway of Florence; and sister, Joyce Pounder and brother-in-law, Major Gary Pounder. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 AM, on Friday, September 29, 2023, at Florence Baptist Temple Chapel. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday at Florence Baptist Temple Chapel. Burial will follow at Lake City Memorial Park directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
