George Gliba, 75, of Florence, South Carolina, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at his home. George was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1949. He immigrated to the United States from communist Hungary and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1982. Alongside his wife Irene and their young daughter Melinda, they settled in Maine, living in Portland, Cumberland and later in Bowdoinham. In the small town of Bowdoinham, George pursued the American dream by starting his own business with his family—a two-bay, single gas pump station and repair garage that they successfully operated for 17 years. George was known for his avid love of hunting, particularly for turkey and deer. George loved nature, animals and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed history, traveling and actively participated with the Mason Village Lodge #26, in Bowdoinham, ME. His warm personality and generosity earned him many friends in the community and opened the door to countless outdoor adventures. In 2018, George retired to Florence, South Carolina, where he once again built lasting relationships with his neighbors and community members. George is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Irene (Kiss) Gliba; his daughter Melinda Gliba Renda; his son-in-law Joseph Renda; his grandchildren, Samuel and Amelia Renda; his brother Gliba Géza; and his sisters, Nagy-Gliba Magdolna and sister-in-law Serbán-Gliba Margit. In addition to his parents George is predeceased by his parents and brother József Gliba. A visitation will be held on Friday, August 23, 2024, from 4:00 – 6:00 PM, at the family home. The family asks for those who are unable to attend to have a moment of remembrance for Mr. Gliba at that time. Please sign the Guest Book for the family at www.stoudenmiredowling.com.
