James Arthur Newman, 56, of Effingham, S.C., died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025, of injuries suffered in a vehicle accident. Jim was born March 26, 1968, in Washington, Pa., a son of the late John and Alice Newman. He spent his early life in Claysville, Pa., then moved with the family when he was about 12 to the area of Cook Forest in Pennsylvania, where he worked for several years with horses at a local riding stable. Jim graduated from North Clarion High School in 1986 and later moved to South Carolina, where he worked in the construction materials industry. Most recently, he worked in the shipping department at Charles Ingram Lumber Co. For the past three years, Jim bravely, and successfully, fought against leukemia, showing the good spirit and grace for which he always was known. He was a generous and caring person who had many friends and was always lending a helping hand to those in need. He cared deeply for his friends and family, and was a big part of our lives. His joy came from making sure those around him were cared for. He will be remembered for his selflessness and big heart. His spirit will live on in the many lives he touched. Jim loved riding his motorcycle and getting his “wind therapy.” His children and grandchildren meant the world to him, and he took great care of his mother in her declining years. Surviving are his children, Shayla (Kevin Reed) Newman and Christian Newman, both of Florence, S.C.; his grandchildren, Rhett James and Anniston Faith; one brother, Brant (Jenny) Newman of Avella, Pa.; and his brother-in-law, Dave Wolbert of the Myrtle Beach, S.C., area; and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Deceased, in addition to his parents, is a sister, Mary Kathleen “Kate” Newman Wolbert. There will be no public services. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held later in South Carolina. The family is being assisted by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
