Jharna Dutta was born in a beautiful little place called Bagnan in West Bengal, India in 1940. As a teenage girl she loved to help her father in his agriculture business. She married Pranabananda Dutta, a civil engineer, at the age of 19 and shortly thereafter moved to Ranchi, Bihar (Jharkhand). There, she raised her two children until 1991 when her husband retired from work. She then moved to Domjur, Howrah, in West Bengal. In the later stages of her life, in 2019, she moved to United States to live in Florence, South Carolina. In Ranchi, she made many friends who were like family to her, and who enriched each other during social gatherings and community events. She would meet every weekday morning with these lifelong friends to catch up on everyday events. She was an enthusiastic bridge player and enjoyed playing the game with family and friends. She took sewing lessons and enjoyed the craft, becoming an expert at it; she stitched all the clothes for her family thereafter. She also made many uniquely designed batik printed sarees and dresses. She would patiently sit and teach the children of the household workers how to read and write while they were working in her house, and was known for helping everyone. She was proficient in making Indian as well as western delicacies, and enjoyed making wonderful cakes and sweets. After retirement, she traveled to the United States very frequently and had a wonderful time with her children and grandchildren. She also frequently visited all her relatives who lived in West Bengal and went on tours of India. She passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her husband, children, grandchildren, and loved ones on December 21, 2021.
