LULA MARGARET MATTHEWS EFFINGHAM, SC LULA MARGARET MATTHEWS, 85, of Effingham, died Monday, December 13, 2010 at her residence after an illness. Mrs. Matthews was born in Florence County, SC a daughter of the late Alger David and Rosalee Humphries Poston. She was a member of the First Pentecostal Baptist Church in Effingham, where she taught Sunday school for a number of years and was also a soloist. She was employed for 15 years with Florence Manufacturing and later retired from Union Carbide. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Alger Darrell Matthews, who died in 1962; brother, David Thomas Poston; daughter-in-law, Christine Matthews and a great-grandson, Ethan Timmons. Surviving are her husband of 67 years, Winter Lee Matthews of the home; 5 children, Winetta (Wilbur) Strickland of Effingham, Travis (Sandra) Matthews of Florence, Oral (Debbie) Matthews and Debra (Nick) Kale both of Effingham and Shannon Matthews of Florence; sisters, Juliet (Bill) Dority of Hartsville and Mary Smith of Columbia; brothers, Roger (Noni) Poston and W. Hallahan (Frankie) Poston both of Florence; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The Matthews family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to one of Mrs. Lula's granddaughters, Cheryl Turner, for her love and support during this difficult time. Memorials may be made to the First Pentecostal Baptist Church, 1916 W. John Paul Jones Road, Effingham, SC29541. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 16, 2010 at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Funeral Home.
