Mary Hilgers Mcnulty

Mary Hilgers McNulty Florence, S.C. Mary Hilgers McNulty, 71, of Florence, passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2012 in the McLeod Hospice House with her husband by her side. Dr. McNulty was born in Racine, WI, a daughter of the late John and Viola M. Held Hilgers. Mary had retired from Francis Marion University in 2008 after 29 years as an English Professor. She received her BA from Racine Dominican College, her Masters from Harvard University, and her PHD from the University of Notre Dame. As a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, she was a former Parish Council member, a member of the Women Of St.Anthony, was active in the Prayer Shawl Ministry, and was a Literacy Tutor. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Elaine Beardsley. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Owen McNulty of Florence, son, Thomas Owen (Aimee) McNulty of Midlothian, VA; daughter, Rebecca M. Skirvin (Tim) of Mountain View, CA; sister, Rita Adamczyk of Racine, WI; brother, John (Julie) Hilgers of Gold Canyon, AZ; and 2 grandchildren, Linnaea and Gideon McNulty. A mass of Christian Burial will be said at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Entombment will follow in Mount Hope Mausoleum, directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, at the funeral home.
