Mary Louise Claussen Mcintyre

August 25, 1925 — March 13, 2024

Ms. Mary Louise Claussen McIntyre of Florence, SC passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, in Colorado with her devoted nephew and his wife by her side. She was soon to be 99 years of age. Born in August of 1925 and raised in Claussen, South Carolina—a country town named after her Great Grandfather, Johann Christian Heinrich Claussen, Grandfather, William Fredrick Claussen and Father Dr. John Rudolph Claussen, who became the State Doctor of South Carolina. Ms. McIntyre was a longtime member of the Daughters of the Confederacy and the First Presbyterian Church of Florence for many years. She had a great passion for her flower gardens surrounding her home that she herself planted and groomed. She was an avid bird watcher with many favorite books she'd turn to, so she'd know the names of each who graced her with their presence. As it was God's will, Ms. McIntyre outlived most of her friends and family. After Malcolm's passing, she lived independently in her historic home built in the early 1940's until her passing. In 2019 she sustained a severe fall, having no children to turn to in her time of need, we respectfully and dutifully accepted the honor of being her family advocate for her care until she passed. Ms. McIntyre was extremely well educated with a bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina and was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She obtained a master's degree in business administration from New York University(NYU) and was offered a professorship at Duke University. In lieu of the offer, she dedicated her support to her husband Malcolm McIntyre, who was in training to become an Opera singer in New York. Mary Louise and her husband were world travelers and avid golfers. They kept up the farming tradition of planting and harvesting of the State's beloved Loblolly pines as well as the leasing of crop acreage to other farmers. Her final homecoming was awaited by her previously deceased parents, Dr. John Rudolph Claussen and her mother Elizabeth Louise Claussen as well as her husband Malcolm McIntyre. She is survived by her sister-in-law Mary Catherine Tiedge, Nephew Brian Tiedge and wife Lori, their (2)sons, Brennan & wife Catherine, their (2) children Annika & Boden, son Derek & his wife Nicole, Nephew Jeffrey Scott Tiedge and son Chris, Nephew Malcolm McIntyre and family and close cousin Dr. Marvin Rozear. We opted to move her to Colorado where she lived for the past 3 years. She felt she had better access to family visitations and constant advocacy for the needed care she was receiving. She and her sister-in-law Mary were neighbors in the facility where she lived and became quite close those last few years. Those who got to know her and cared for her, were able to celebrate her life with her first memorial service held in Colorado. Per her wishes, we traveled back to South Carolina and laid her to rest with a graveside service held Friday, April 12, 2024. The service was held at Hopewell Presbyterian Church Cemetery, by Reverend Mike Fleenor and directed by Sandy Dowling of Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. We'd like to thank both the King Gregg and Tommy Folk families for many years of dedicated friendship, service and care they gave Ms. McIntyre throughout her lifetime. She was a blessing to us all and will be truly missed. We will surely relish the fond memories and stories she shared with us throughout the short time we knew her. Rest in peace Aunt Mary Louise.
