Mary Phipps Walton

August 10, 1949 — August 11, 2023

Mary P. Walton, better known as “Susie”, 74 of Florence, SC passed away on Friday, August 11, 2023, at McLeod Hospice House after a short battle with Alzheimer’s. She was born in Goldsboro, NC, on August 10, 1949, and was the daughter of the late Carlton and Francis Phipps. She was a member of South Florence Baptist Church, where she was better known as the “candy lady”. She was a survivor of breast cancer, not once but twice. After many years of bookkeeping, she cared for her late husband, Creed Fulton Walton, III, who entered his heavenly home on October 18, 2022. Susie was a huge North Carolina Tar Heels fan but as much as she loved them, she loved to watch her grandson, Cameron, (the apple of her eye) play ball and was absolutely his biggest fan. She loved music and dancing with the beach music being her favorite. She was lovingly known for rotating her hips and saying “Oh baby. I still got it”. She loved everyone she encountered, especially children and was always full of joy and laughter. She leaves behind her only child, Delton Ray Baker, III (Daisy); sister, Cindy Melton; grandson, Cameron Baker; step-grandchildren, Spencer Allen (Lauren) and Candice Allen; great-grandson, Levi Evans; her special nephew, Ken Lancaster; and many nieces & nephews. Also surviving is Delton Ray Baker, Jr., her first husband, who remained her life-long friend. Along with her parents and husband, she is also proceeded in death by a brother, Robert “Barney” Phipps. Family will receive friends from 4:00 – 5:00 PM on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at South Florence Baptist Church and at other times at the son’s residence, 6519 Anderson Field Road, Effingham, SC 29541. Funeral service will be held at 5:00 PM on Tuesday at the church directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. A private burial will be held at a later date.
