Mattie Sports Calcutt, 90, of Florence, SC passed away on April 21, 2024. Mattie was born on January 29, 1934 on a farm in Georgetown County to Charlie Wright Sports and Mellie Gibson Sports. Her daddy moved the family to Florence when she was 14 and there she met and later married the love of her life, John “Monk” Rutledge Calcutt. They were married for 19 years and had 5 children before he passed away in 1970. She was a faithful member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church until her health declined and had served in many areas, including 40 years as Sunday school secretary. She worked at Tommy’s Wholesale Florist and then at Carolina Supply House in the garden shop. She was preceded in death by her parents and loving husband; sons, John S. Calcutt and Terry R. Calcutt; daughter, Robin C. Timmons; grandchildren, Vanessa Thompson, Stephanie Tillery, and CW2 Joshua Tillery; great-grandchild, Xander Thompson; brothers, Charlie Sports, George Sports, and William Sports; sisters, Kathryn Leviner, Ann Graham, Bertha Purvis, Margaret Hyman, and Margie Lee. Surviving are her two devoted daughters and son-in-law, Lori C. (Mike) Shirley and Tammy C. Richardson, both of Florence; 8 grandchildren, Jay (Mandy) Calcutt, Michael Calcutt, Michele (Tony) Clark, John (Jennifer) Calcutt, Crystal (Eddie) DeFee, Jennifer (TJ) Hart, Tommy Richardson, and Amanda Anderson; 24 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, including special niece, Beverly McKee; and special “son”, Scott Richardson. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Shriners Hospital, www.shrinerschildrens.org or to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, www.stjude.org. The family would like to thank McLeod Hospice for their loving care, Dan Garrison, Rev. Scott Ard, and Sandy Williams, as well as her many nurses aids who delivered her care; Dr. Ed Behling, and the staff on the 4th floor of the McLeod Towers who took such great care of their mother. The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00 am Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at Ridgecrest Baptist Church with the funeral service to be held at 11:00 am in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
