Mrs. Nell McCoy Loflin Yochum, 96, of Florence, S.C., died Saturday, April 1, 2023. Funeral services will be held at All Saints’ Anglican Church, Florence, S.C.at 2:00 PM on Friday, April 7, 2023 with burial to follow in Mount Hope Cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Born in Thomasville, N.C., on February 28, 1927, Mrs. Yochum was the daughter of the late Dewey Henderson and Ruth Surratt Loflin. She attended Thomasville High School, Thomasville N.C. and High Point University, High Point, N.C., where she majored in business administration and music. Mrs. Yochum was the widow of John Edward Yochum, who died on July 14, 1986. Her husband was a Certified Public Accountant, and together they were active in the South Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Accountants. Mrs. Yochum was president of the South Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants Auxiliary for two terms. She was an active member of civic clubs and organizations in North and South Carolina. She was a member of All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Florence, where she organized three choirs for the youth and was active in the music program there. She directed adult and children’s choirs in South Carolina and North Carolina churches. In 2003, Mrs. Yochum was a member of a choir composed of Episcopalians from the Diocese of South Carolina and the Upper Diocese of South Carolina that sang for South Carolina Day at the Washington National Cathedral, Washington, D.C. Mrs. Yochum participated and served in many positions of the Episcopal Church at All Saints’ as well as the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina. She served on the Diocesan Evangelism Commission for several years. She was Vice-President of the Diocesan Episcopal Church Women and was Diocesan Episcopal Church Women’s Florence District Director. For many years, she was a lay reader in the Episcopal Church. She was active in her churches, serving on many committees. One meaningful project was working with others to needlepoint new kneelers at All Saints’ Episcopal Church. Her hobbies were music and creating many needlepoint heirlooms for her family. Mrs. Yochum was active in the Episcopal Cursillo Movement of the Diocese of South Carolina, serving as Lay Rector for Cursillo # 62 at Camp St. Christopher on Seabrook Island, S.C. She was registrar for the Diocese of South Carolina Cursillo Secretariat and a board member for several years. She was a delegate to the National Cursillo Conference for three years. She was also active in the Episcopal Faith Alive Movement and served on weekend teams at churches in several states and South Carolina. She was an avid bridge player and participated in local groups and her duplicate bridge clubs. Mrs. Yochum is survived by one daughter, Susan Earle Pleasant; one son, David Henderson Pleasant; two granddaughters: Sarah Elizabeth “Bebe” Pleasant; and Grace Xin Chu Pleasant; Jennifer Mills; one nephew, Thomas Dewey Harris; and one great nephew, Paul Harris. She was predeceased in death by her parents, her sister Doris Loflin Holbrook, her grandparents, J.C. and Ida Loflin, and Alva McCoy and Sarah Etta Surratt. The family would like to acknowledge Samantha Brown, her Hospice Nurse. Sam took tender, effective, professional care of Mrs. Yochum. More importantly she brightened her day, showed authentic caring, and became a beloved part of her last months. In addition, Samantha’s efforts were supported by Betsy Hudson and the team at Pruitt Hospice. They earned a place in Mrs. Yochum’s official “life story.” The family asks that donations be made to All Saints Anglican Church in Nell Yochum’s honor in lieu of flowers.
