Patricia McKenzie Blackmon, 77, of Florence, passed away on Friday, December 23, 2022. Mrs. Blackmon was born in Lake City, SC. She graduated from McClenaghan High School in the Class of 1963 and attended Coker College where she graduated in 3 ½ years. She received her master’s degree from USC in Music Education. She taught at Head Start in Lake City in 1963 and taught music and chorus for 23 years for Florence School District One and gave private music lessons. After retirement she worked for child protective services and then went into animal rescue. In 2004 she volunteered for and then became the SC Director for Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue, was a volunteer driver for rescues up and down the East Coast and I-95, and also worked with the Marion shelter as a driver. Patricia was a member of Central United Methodist Church where she was a member of the handbell choir. She was preceded in death by her father, Raymond Keith McKenzie, her husband, Julius Vernon “Tom” Blackmon, and a brother, Raymond McKenzie. Surviving are her step-son, Scott Blackmon of Florence; step-daughter, Kimberly (O’Neil) McClam of Summerton; grandchildren, Charlie (Katie) Hewitt, Joseph Hewitt, Johannah (Michael) Wilson, and Jessica Blackmon; great-grandchildren, Olivia Hewitt, Tripp Hewitt, Ella Gray Hewitt, and Campbell Scott Wilson; sister, Beth (Steve Douglas) McKenzie of Florence. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Jayne Boswell Animal Shelter, 1434 S. McCurdy Road, Florence, SC 29506. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm Wednesday, December 28, 2022 in the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be held at a later date.
