Pranabananda Dutta was born in Domjur, Howrah, in the state of West Bengal in India in 1933. He was the eldest of eight siblings. After completing his Intermediate Science degree from Presidency College, Calcutta, in 1952, he joined the Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur, West Bengal, and graduated in 1956 as a Civil Engineer. Subsequently, he first joined the Damodar Valley Corporation as an Engineer, and then joined the Heavy Engineering Corporation in Ranchi, where he worked from 1962 to 1991, until retirement. He then moved to Domjur, Howrah, in West Bengal and lived in his ancestral house, surrounded by his extended family and childhood friends. In the later stages of his life, in 2019, he moved to the United States to live in Florence, South Carolina. He married Jharna Dutta in 1959 and they remained married for 62 years, until she predeceased him by a few months. Together they raised two children. He was an outstanding bridge player and enjoyed playing the game with family and friends, and participated in tournaments. He was an avid reader in English and Bengali, and loved solving challenging crosswords. He was well regarded for his even temperament and for being amiable to all. He is remembered for his volunteer activities and for providing assistance to many in need. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and loved ones on March 30, 2022, having led a full and joyful life.
