Rachel Viola Lane Gainer Rogers, 98, of Florence, SC, passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2022. Mrs. Rogers was born in Lynchburg, SC, May 8, 1924, the third daughter of the late Bessie Jane Buff Lane and William Thomas Lane.She attended and graduated from Lynchburg High School.She and her sisters were well known for their musicality as they grew up.They enjoyed sharing their music, especially bluegrass, country, pops and hymns.Rachel played the guitar, oldest sister Ruby, the banjo, next sister Reu, the fiddle, and youngest sister, Annie, the mandolin.They sang 4 part harmony.The group continued until the sisters were married and left their paternal homeplace.Her siblings increased by two brothers, William Russell Lane and Ernest Ralph Lane. She was a bookkeeper and retired from Pee Dee Regional Transportation Authority and was a member of Peace Free Will Baptist Church. Rachel married Vernon U Gainer and son, Vernon, and daughter, Mirial were soon added to the family.They moved to Miami, FL where Rachel became an active member of the First Free Will Baptist Church in NW Miami.In 1963, Rachel relocated back to SC where she continued her active service in First FWB Church in Florence.Later she was a part of the group that planted the FWB Bible Church on Church Street and also was involved in the development of Peace FWB Church on Third Loop Road, where she was active in the women’s ministry, teaching and visitation until she became bedridden in 2016. Rachel loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ above all and her family next.She was proud of her son and daughter and the contribution each made through their chosen work and lives.She especially loved her grandsons, Vernon Thomas “Tommy” (Amy) Gainer, Jr. of Land O’ Lakes, FL, and Andrew Ryan (Janet) Gainer-Dewar of Sharon, MA; 7 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren. She met and married Thomas F. Rogers of Grafton, MA.They were parted by his death in June of 1973.In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, William Russell Lane and Ernest Ralph Lane, and sisters, Ruby Lee James, Reu Jane Locklair, and Annie Roxanna Shumake. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 pm Saturday, July 16, 2022 at Peace Free Will Baptist Church with the service to be held in the church sanctuary at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Please sign the tribute wall for the family at www.stoudenmiredowling.com.
