Raleigh Wilburn Shorter

Raleigh Wilburn "R.W." Shorter Florence, SC Raleigh Wilburn "R.W." Shorter, 92, died Saturday morning, January 22, 2011 at his residence after an illness. Mr. Shorter was born in Manning, SC a son of the late James C. and Maude Aycock Shorter. He was employed as Transportation Division Supervisor with Carolina Power and Light for over 43 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Florence Elks Lodge, member of the Amity Lodge #340 AFM, Omar "Daredevils", York Rite Bodies and the Omar Shrine Temple. He was also a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Past President of the McNair Sunday School Class, Past President of the St. Paul Joy Club and Past member of the Church Administrative Board.He attended the General Motors School for Motor Vehicle Maintenance after he graduated from High School. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha McElveen Shorter, who died June 18, 2001 and a daughter, Diane Shorter, who died July 13, 2000; sister, Shirley Lowder Surviving is his loving family, daughter, Priscilla (Roy L.) Bowers of Pawleys Island; brothers, J.C. Shorter, Jr. of Sumter and Furman L. Shorter of Columbia; sister, Mary Toddof Sumter;2 grandchildren, Kathryn B. (Chris) Wells of Flower Mound, Tx., Celeste B. (Joel) Harris of Hartsville, SC; great-grandchildren, Katy Wells, Emily Anne and Will Harris. Also surviving are special friends Harry Kennedy and Carolyn McClanahan. Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1629 W. Palmetto Street, Florence, SC or to the Shriners Children's Hospital, P.O.Box 21028, Charleston, SC29413. Funeral service will held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 24, 2011 at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Sunday at the Funeral Home.
