Sgt. John Charlton Holladay

April 4, 1912 — July 20, 1943

Sgt. John Charlton Holladay, USMC was killed in action during World War II by a Japanese sniper on July 20, 1943 at Bairoko Harbor on New Georgia Island in the Soloman Islands.After more than 72 years, his remains were found on February 24, 2015, were properly identified on July 30, 2015 through modern DNA technology and are being returned home for burial. Sgt. Holladay was born on April 4, 1912 in Paxville, SC to John Henry Holladay and Elizabeth Corbett Holladay.He attended public schools in Florence and graduated from Florence High School in 1930. At the time of his death, he was survived by his parents and two brothers, James H. (Gladys) Holladay and Daniel (Mary) Holladay, Sr.All of which now are deceased. He is now survived by a sister, Caroline Holladay of Sumter, SC; nieces, Ann H. (Jimmy) Locke of Lake City, SC, Kathy H. (Jesse) Hill of Elgin, SC and Patsy H. (Jim) Allen of Florence, SC; nephews, James H. “Red” (Helen) Holladay, Jr. of Florence, Daniel Charlton (Libby) Holladay of Florence, William C. “Bill” (Ann) Holladay of Florence, Daniel (Sharon) Holladay, Jr. of Columbia, Jack P. Holladay of Milton, FL and Charles S. (Dana) Holladay, M.D. of Charleston. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, April 4, 2016 with full military honors at the Florence National Cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
