Colonel (Retired) Thomas James Sheehy II, 79, of Florence, SC, passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at his home in Florence, SC. Thomas (Tom) was a twenty-six year veteran of the U. S. Army, Corps of Engineers. He served two tours in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Star with “V” Device, the Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. He was the Community Commander of the Boeblingen-Sindelfingen Military Community and the Battalion Commander of the 237th Engineer Battalion while stationed in West Germany. Upon retirement from the Army, Tom started a construction management company that provided services for various construction projects in the D.C. Metropolitan area and the Carolinas. In 2009 Tom moved to Florence, SC from Fairfax, VA with his wife Michelene and soon was engaged in the community. He was the Windsor Forest Neighborhood Association President for four years, was a Citizen Columnist for the Florence Morning News, and was Tournament Director for the Tri-County Senior Golfers Association. Tom loved sports. He played basketball and baseball during his high school years. In addition to coaching his sons’ various basketball teams, he also refereed high school football when living in Fairfax, VA and developed a fondness for golf, especially when he moved to Florence. Tom was an avid fan of his beloved New York Yankees and the Bison of North Dakota State University, his alma mater. He was born in Indianapolis, IN, the son of the late Thomas J. Sheehy and Sadie M. Sheehy. Surviving him are his wife of 52 years, Michelene Sheehy; sons, James (Nikki) Sheehy, of Hartsville, SC, and Matthew (Cindy) Sheehy, of Deerfield, MA; grandchildren, Jameson and Jacob Sheehy, of Hartsville, SC; Mackenzie and Jackson Sheehy of Deerfield, MA; half-brother, Stanton McIntosh, of Indianapolis, IN, and half-sister Mary Lynn Paul, of Dandridge, TN. A prayer vigil will be held at 5:30 PM, Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel followed by a visitation from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to North Dakota State University, designated for the Col.
