Winter Lee Matthews

WINTER LEE MATTHEWS EFFINGHAM, SC WINTER LEE MATTHEWS, 88, of Effingham, SC died Tuesday, August 16, 2011 in a Florence hospital after an illness. Mr. Matthews was born in Florence Co., SC a son of the late William McKinley and Minkey Lucille Broach Matthews.He was a US Army veteran having served during WWII.He was a member of the First Pentecostal Baptist Church of Effingham where he served as Trustee and Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was employed as an electrician with Fortner-Watkins for 35 years and was also employed for 10 years with General Electric, from which he retired. He was a musician and loved gardening and fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 67 years, Lula Margaret Poston Matthews, who died December 13, 2010; son, Darrell Matthews, who died in 1962; 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Surviving are his children, Winetta (Wilbur) Strickland of Effingham, Travis (Sandra) Matthews of Florence, Oral (Debbie) Matthews of Effingham, Debra (Nick) Kale of Effingham and Shannon Matthews of Florence; eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert E. Matthews of Johnsonville, James M. Matthews of Florida, Jimmy C. Matthews of Effingham, Cecil L. Matthews of Florida and Wesley L. Matthews of Florence; sister, Mildred M. Hurley of Florence. Memorials may be made to the First Pentecostal Baptist Church, 1916 W. John Paul Jones Road, Effingham, SC29541. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 19, 2011 at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.
